International school with a campus at the western edge of Minhang. WISS was founded in 2006 as an all IB-environment school. It offers the full IB program from the primary years (PYP) to the diploma program (DP) in 2012. It is also the only IB full continuum school in Shanghai that is authorized to offer the specialized IB career-related education (CP) in the secondary years. The school hosts the UK registered International School's Theatre Association (ISTA) as well as the Stoke City Football Camp Academy.
The Western International School of Shanghai (WISS) is the first and only full continuum IB World School in Mainland China. Educating young people from across the globe in a caring and inspirational environment since 2006; WISS strives to send compassionate, brave, ethically-minded global citizens into the world. As an IB World School, WISS is uniquely placed to promote new perspectives and broaden the minds of the children in our care; deepening their sense of understanding and wonder.
Working with children from the age of 2.5 to 18, our students represent more than 50 different nationalities. This exciting blend of cultures and ethnicities allows us to explore challenging aspects of the world around us through a rigorous curriculum of inquiry-based learning. Whether our students are with us for a year or two, or stay through to graduation and move on to the university of their dreams, we want our young people to look back on WISS as a time when their love of learning was awakened and they began to touch the lives of those around them.

WISS was the only school that made us realize that we had not come to a wrong city; the admission staff at WISS were extremely cordial and welcoming. A few minutes of talking over the phone made us decide to choose WISS-and then the journey began. As time passes, slowly, we forgot that we are away from India in our first ever assignment abroad. No other school than WISS would have done justice to our requirement and the criteria we were looking at in a school to build our children’s future.

The school year is divided into two semesters, beginning in August and ending in June.
Class sizes can vary depending on grade level and subject. (The following are the approximate class sizes per programme. PYP 16-18; MYP 18 ; DP 14) The average student-teacher ratio is 7:1.
Teachers come from all over the world and represent over 25 different nationalitie. In an effort to build cultural understanding of the host country, the Early Years and Primary schools use a co-teaching model where classes are taught by one international teacher and one Chinese teacher in partnership.

Early Years and Primary students enjoy afternoon activities as part of their school day once per week. Additionally, after school activities are offered per semester and run throughout the week for all students.
WISS is a member of the China International School Sports Association (CISSA), Shanghai Schools Sports Association (SSSA), Shanghai International Schools Athletic Conference (SISAC), and the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS).
Located on the western side of Shanghai, close to many popular housing compounds in the expatriate community, WISS has one of the largest international school campuses in Shanghai with facilities for Early Years, Primary and Secondary spread out over 18 acres. Our Early Years building is a purpose-built facility specially designed for our youngest learners by Weimar Architects of the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. The modern campus features open plan, bright classrooms equipped with ceiling air purification units, a well-resourced library with areas for Early Years, Primary, and Secondary, a large cafeteria, two cafes, and a multi-function community room and Tiger Hall.
WISS also boasts state of the art science and technology labs equipped with 3D printers and laser cutters as well as the most up to date hardware and software for design. Primary students use the Jungle for science and cooking and the Da Vinci Innovation Space for robotics and engineering. Our creative arts program boasts spacious art studios, a black box classroom theatre, the Orsini Theatre, and sleek music studios. Sports facilities include both grass and Astroturf football fields, basketball courts, a gymnasium equipped with a rock climbing wall, and two swimming pools.
WISS offers Scholarship for University, IB Diploma Full Academic Scholarships, Outstanding Achievement Partial Scholarships, Financial Assistance Scholarships. In addition to these in-house scholarships, there are two more incredible opportunities for scholarships through the Western International School of Shanghai’s IB Career-Related Program and partnerships with the Savannah College of Art & Design and FirstPoint USA.
Annual school bus fee 15, 500rmb. Additional fee charged for locations outside the normal pickup areas. 20% discount with two or more children or if living close to the school.
